Rational: We believe at Bright Stars Educare that a smooth and informed transition to school empowers children to achieve greater social and academic success.  We are committed to ensuring that all families that attend this centre receive best possible transition experiences.

Objective: Children achieve a smooth and successful transition to school. Providing families with appropriate information, with consideration given to individual and cultural needs.

Procedure:

1) Each year a staff member will be assigned to gather current information about local schools and display them in the baskets on the wall in the sign in area.  Additional current literature for transition to school will also be gathered and displayed.

2) Children who are aged 4+yrs are placed in the transition to school group. Activities will be planned and implemented by a staff member on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for approximately 30mins after lunchtime.  Activities will focus on areas such as writing, literacy and numeracy. Homework may be sent home so parents can be involved with their child’s learning. Younger children may be included into the group.

3) Staff will hold whanau information evenings where knowledge about the transition process for school will be discussed.

4) A checklist and assessment will be kept to show the child’s progress.  Staff will assist families with school visits if needed.
